F.A.Q.
Do you currently have any availability?
I am currently fully booked, however it is always worth enquiring about vacancies; for example, I am able to use free periods for A Level students, if students are allowed out of school during these times. There is generally more availbility as the academic year finishes, when some slots then become free.
What subjects do you teach and at what level?
I teach Maths and English up to GCSE-level, as well as the three sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics). I also offer Biology and Chemistry at A Level. However, up until GCSE-level (KS1, KS2 and KS3), I am able to provide support in most subjects, if discussed prior to the session and well in advance.
Are you results focused? Can you guarantee certain grades or results for my child?
I am not a tutor that focuses on grades or exam results. My focus is on building self-esteem, as well as resilience to deal with the ups and downs of life, which can include academic performance. I focus on results, but in the form of improved confidence. Nine times out of ten, I then see that academic performance follows. The mental health of the child will always be my first priority.
What qualifications/experience do you have?
I have a strong academic record as I worked incredibly hard at school. I received 8A*s and 2 As at GCSE and then A*s in Chemistry and Biology and a B in French at A Level. I also have an A in AS Level Maths. I went on to study Biology at the University of Bath, where I graduated with a First Class Honours degree (including a professional placement year). I did my training with Explore Learning and was given many tips and tricks for teaching and was upskilled in many areas. I now have a wealth of experience in private tuition- please feel free to read some testimonials to find out more.
Do you teach the 11+ or similar courses to prepare for entrance exams?
Yes, I am trained and have experience in teaching a course to help prepare children for the 11+ or for entrance exams. However, I am not a ‘pushy’ tutor and never guarantee results; I can teach the skills needed to pass the test and aim to build confidence and resilience as we progress through the course. However, ultimately, it is your child sitting the test and there are multiple parameters outside my control that can influence the result. The mental health of the child will always be my first priority.
Are there other courses you are trained in?
I also have experience of teaching creative writing courses, as well as exam preparation sessions (which include looking at revision techniques, exam technique and tools for anxiety). I also hope to be trained soon in mental health first aid; this will enhance my current skills gained through my lived experience. I run sessions on mindfulness, confidence-building and self-esteem work and other mental health-related topics.
Do you teach online or in person?
Pre-Covid, I was solely a face-to-face tutor. However, the pandemic forced us to switch to online teaching and therefore master the technology, as well as how to deliver as good an experience online. I have worked hard to perfect this, so now believe the experience is almost the same. I therefore offer both options currently; this is partly down to personal preference of the families but also location-dependent.
For face-to-face lessons, do you come to us?
Yes, I generally come to you for face-to-face lessons. I travel within a set mile radius from my home and if you live outside this area, I can offer online sessions instead. In certain circumstances, I can host lessons at my home.
